Privacy in ChatGPT: Settings, Data Storage, and Protection Methods

Privacy in ChatGPT: Settings, Data Storage, and Protection Methods

In the era of artificial intelligence, a vast amount of personal information is shared during interactions with language models — ranging from dietary preferences and lifestyle details to contact information and financial data. If we do not know where this information is stored and for what purpose it is processed, our digital security can be at risk.

This guide provides a clear overview of ChatGPT’s privacy policies (developed by OpenAI) and explains, step by step, how to configure its privacy settings to achieve the highest possible level of data protection.

Data Collected by ChatGPT

OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, maintains two separate privacy policies — one for users in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, and another for users in other regions. Both policies involve extensive personal and technical data collection, including:

  • Account information (name, password, date of birth, transactions)
  • User content (prompts, images, uploaded files, and audio)
  • Technical data (IP address, browser type, request timestamps, and interaction details)
  • Usage data (country, timezone, device type, and features used)
  • Device information (model and operating system)
  • Approximate location identified through IP address
  • Cookies and similar technologies for authentication and enhanced security

EEA users have the right to object to data processing for direct marketing or for OpenAI’s so‑called “legitimate interests” (such as improving internal services), while users elsewhere do not have these specific rights.

How ChatGPT Handles Your Data

By default, ChatGPT may use user conversations — including text and uploaded files — for model training. This applies to Free, Plus, and Pro accounts.

On the other hand, Enterprise, Business, and API accounts do not use user data for training by default, unless administrators explicitly enable it.

OpenAI lists the following key purposes for processing user data:

Maintaining service functionality and user support

Improving performance and adding new features

Communicating updates and news with users

Ensuring security and preventing cyberattacks

Complying with legal obligations

The company notes that it may anonymize personal data, but is not obliged to do so in every case. It also reserves the right to transfer personal data to contractors, technical partners, or government authorities when required for service operation, legal compliance, or security reasons.

 Data Storage and Security Standards

All user data is processed and stored on OpenAI servers located in the United States.

Despite differences in international data‑protection legislation, OpenAI asserts that it applies uniform security standards for all users worldwide.

How to Prevent ChatGPT from Using Your Data for Training

To disable the use of your personal data for model training:

  1. Click your profile name in the lower‑left corner of the screen.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open the Data Controls section.
  4. Turn off the option for “Training” or Chat History saving.

By doing this, your personal data will not be used for training, and your chat history will no longer be saved. These settings represent the most effective way to ensure true privacy in ChatGPT.
